Stella in Phoenix

It’s been 8 months since I last spoke to Stella in May 2020. She lived in a small apartment in New York City back then. The pandemic was rattling her but neither of us could have predicted the COVID-based decisions she would make just a few months later.

Scroll down to hear how Stella, New Yorker through and through ended up in her own pool in Phoenix, Arizona.

We link you back to the multimedia
homepage at the end, but if you want to

Summerhouse

“I knew I was working a lot but I didn't know that I was always on and always driving and pressing and going. And I think in part, it's because I was alone and my systems just weren’t working anymore.

That’s when I decided to rent a summerhouse and I stayed there from May 22 through August 31st.

It ended up being exactly what I needed.”

Winter is coming

“When I got back to New York and was looking to the winter, I started to have a feeling that New York City is going to be really ugly.

So I talked to some of my friends and we decided to rent a house somewhere warm and stay there over the winter.”

Shit always works out for Stella

“My working theory is: Shit always works out for Stella!

Whenever something horrible happens, my immediate mindset is: Oh fuck.

My second mindset is: Wait, but Shit always works out for Stella!

I can't wait to see how this works itself out. Because I always know that it will work out.”

“There are only plus sides to this. Like the worst thing out of all of this - minus COVID and how challenging it is - I'm most stressed out about my six dinner plates.

During the move to Arizona, six of my dinner plates broke and they’re now discontinued. And why was it the dinner plates? Why couldn't you break a fucking bowl?

That’s my worst case scenario: Having to buy all new plates.”

“I’ve connected more fully with my neighbours here than I did with any of my neighbours all together in 20 years of living in New York City, and I've been here for two weeks.

It's a different world of people. And I think I'll find my circle.”
